Students from both communities attend schools within the Boulder Valley School District. Currently, there are approximately 40 elementary schools, 20 middle schools and 13 high schools. Institutions of higher learning in the area include Front Range Community College, Naropa University, the University of Colorado at Boulder and at Denver and the Colorado Art Academy.

Both of these communities' histories began with coal mining. Louisville was named after Louis Nawatny, a local landowner and mine owner. Superior was named after the "superior" quality of coal found within the area. Acme Mine operated directly beneath Louisville and Industrial Mine operated within Superior. These mines were among more than 30 that operated in the area mines found in and around the area around the turn of the century. Louisville was incorporated in 1882 and the town of Superior was incorporated in 1904.

When the use of coal declined following World War II, the mines began to shut down. Mining was the major force in Superior's history until the Industrial Mine closed in 1945. The last mines near Louisville closed in 1952. Subsequently, many people moved out of the area and the towns evolved into a quiet ranching and farming communities. Superior's population hovered around 250 until recently.

Today, both communities benefit from a booming real estate market thanks to their close proximity to Boulder and the development of new highways that has attracted new industry. Louisville has approximately 1,700 acres of open space earmarked for industrial and commercial growth. Superior also plans on new industrial and commercial development.
